Waffles have been around for a very long time. Many experts agree that their origins took place back in ancient Greece when people used to prepare Obelios, a type of cake baked between metal plates that were fixed to wooden handles.
At a later time, the recipe was improved by making it sweeter and including other tasty ingredients such as butter, cream, and assorted spices. However, it wasn't till rising agents were incorporated to provide a fluffy and nice texture that they started to be known as waffles. 
Later in the 15th century, the delightful snack got a new update: the grid pattern, which was introduced by the Dutch.
Even though it remains uncertain, it was said that the reason why it got this new form, was to cook less batter over a greater surface area. Whatever the true cause might be, everybody loves a crisp raised sugary waffle!
